Cayenne Hybrid's Multiple Failures: TPS or Something Worse?

Hey everyone, my 2018 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is acting up lately. Getting multiple issues at once, engine shutting off out of nowhere, power loss, rough idle, jerking during acceleration, and poor MPG. The check engine light is also on. I suspect it might be the throttle position sensor, but I'd like to hear from anyone who's dealt with similar symptoms. Has anyone gotten this fixed? What was the actual problem and how did your mechanic resolve it? Would really appreciate some real-world experiences before I take it to the shop. Thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A 2018 Porsche Cayenne Hybrid is experiencing multiple issues, including engine shutdowns, power loss, rough idling, jerking during acceleration, and poor fuel efficiency, with the check engine light on. The suspected cause is a faulty throttle position sensor, indicated by error code P2135. A similar case with a Porsche Panamera Hybrid involved replacing a faulty throttle valve and addressing a corroded electrical connector, which resolved the issues. It is advised to address the problem promptly to prevent further damage, and checking the electrical connector for corrosion is recommended.

Hey there! I had something very similar happen with my 2020 Porsche Panamera Hybrid last year. I've got some experience working on cars, but this was definitely beyond my DIY skills. Had almost identical symptoms to yours, the unusual shutdowns and jerky acceleration were super annoying. Took it to my trusted Porsche specialist who diagnosed a faulty throttle valve. The internal mechanics were shot, and they had to replace the whole unit. Set me back about 345 Euro, but it fixed all those issues completely. Before I share more specific details about my repair process, could you tell me: How many miles/km are on your Cayenne? Are you getting any specific error codes? When did these symptoms first start? Really want to make sure we're dealing with the same thing before giving more advice!

Thanks for the detailed response! My Cayenne just hit 114452 KM and had its last service about 2 months ago. The symptoms started showing up gradually over the past 3-4 weeks. I'm getting error code P2135, which from what I understand is related to the throttle position sensor correlation. It's super frustrating because the issues seem unusual, sometimes the car runs perfectly fine for a whole day, then suddenly starts acting up. I haven't gotten around to taking it to a specialist yet because I wanted to gather some real-world experiences first. Your Panamera story sounds eerily similar to what I'm experiencing. Did you notice if the issues got worse in any particular driving conditions?

Hey again! Sorry to hear you're still dealing with these issues. Yeah, when you mentioned the P2135 code, it definitely confirms what I experienced with my Panamera. You know what's interesting? I also noticed that pattern of good days and bad days, super unpredictable. In my case, the problems were definitely worse during cold starts and in wet weather. Also noticed it would act up more when I was driving in heavy traffic with lots of stop-and-go. Just to add to what I shared before, after they replaced my throttle valve, they also found that the electrical connector was a bit corroded. They cleaned that up and applied some dielectric grease to prevent future issues. Might be worth asking your mechanic to check that too when you take it in. One tip from my experience, don't wait too long to get it fixed. I tried driving it like that for a few weeks, and it actually started affecting other sensors in the system. These hybrids are pretty sensitive to any irregularities in the throttle readings. Let me know how it goes when you get it checked out. Curious to see if it's the same issue as mine!

Thanks so much for all this information, it's exactly what I needed to hear! And yeah, now that you mention it, I've noticed it does seem to act up more during my morning commute when it's colder. The stop-and-go traffic thing makes total sense too because that's when I notice the jerking is worst. I'll definitely take your advice and get it looked at ASAP. Really don't want to risk damaging other parts of the system by waiting too long. I'll make sure to have them check the electrical connector too, that's a great tip about the dielectric grease that I wouldn't have thought to mention. I've got an appointment scheduled with my Porsche specialist for next Tuesday. I'll let you know how it turns out, fingers crossed it's as straightforward as your repair was! Really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience. It's definitely helped put my mind at ease about what I'm dealing with.
