Cayman's Triple Threat: Steering, ABS & DSC Warning Signs

Vibrating/shaking steering wheel

ABS/DSC system is not working

Power steering without function

Hi everyone, having a bit of a headache with my 2009 Porsche Cayman (138k km). The steering has become really problematic, wheel shakes quite badly, power steering is out, and both ABS and DSC warnings are lit up on the dash. I've done some research and think it might be the steering angle sensor, but after a previous bad experience with my mechanic, I'm a bit hesitant. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms in their Cayman? Would love to hear about your experiences and any trusted mechanics you'd recommend for this type of issue. Thanks in advance!

I had a similar issue with my 2012 Porsche Boxster last summer. The symptoms were exactly like yours, steering wheel vibrations, power steering failure, and those annoying ABS/DSC warning lights. Took it to my regular Porsche specialist, and it turned out the steering angle sensor was indeed the culprit. The sensor's coding had gotten corrupted, which threw off the whole system. The fix wasn't too complicated, they had to recalibrate and recode the sensor using their diagnostic equipment. In my case, it wasn't a major mechanical issue, but it definitely needed proper attention from a certified technician with the right diagnostic tools. Without the correct coding, these systems won't work properly together. I'd recommend getting it checked soon though, driving without proper power steering and stability control isn't ideal. Make sure you find a shop that specializes in Porsches and has the right diagnostic equipment for these models.

Thanks for sharing your experience! Yeah, that definitely sounds like what I'm dealing with. Really helpful to know it wasn't anything too major. Just curious, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the fix? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you had any other steering-related issues pop up?

Hey there! Happy to give you an update. The fix cost me 195€, pretty reasonable considering it was a Porsche-specific issue. And I've got great news, since getting the steering angle sensor properly recoded, everything's been running like a dream! The steering is butter-smooth now, no more warning lights on the dash, and the ABS and stability control are working perfectly. It's been about 8 months since the fix, and I haven't had a single steering-related problem pop up. Honestly, it's like driving a different car, in a good way! My advice would be to get it sorted sooner rather than later. The peace of mind is totally worth it, and it's not as expensive as you might think. Plus, driving without proper power steering and stability control is no fun at all. Trust me, you'll notice the difference immediately after it's fixed!

Just got back from the mechanic, and I'm so glad I followed your advice! Took it to a Porsche specialist you recommended, and you were spot on, it was the steering angle sensor. The whole thing cost me about 220 €, a bit more than what you paid, but still reasonable. They got it done in just a few hours, and wow, what a difference! The steering's back to being super smooth, those annoying warning lights are gone, and the car feels completely normal again. Such a relief it wasn't anything major. Thanks again for sharing your experience, really helped me avoid getting stressed about it. Think I've found my new go-to mechanic too. They were super professional and explained everything clearly. Definitely keeping their number handy for future reference! Really appreciate everyone's help with this. Case closed!
