Cayman Trans Issues: Grinding & Warning Lights

Warning light in the speedometer of the vehicle

Grinding noise when shifting gears

Transmission slips/shifts erratically

Hey all, having some transmission troubles with my 2016 Cayman. Getting erratic shifts, grinding sounds during gear changes, and the speedo warning light is on. I suspect the transmission temp sensor might be acting up. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? I'd really like to hear about your repair experiences and what your mechanic actually found. What was the fix in your case?

Hi there! I had a similar issue with my 2018 Porsche Boxster (also had experience with a 718), and I have some experience working on cars. The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I dealt with. Took it to my trusted workshop, and it turned out the transmission oil level was too low, causing those weird shifts and noises. Cost me about 365€ to get it sorted, they did a complete transmission fluid change and system check. Before jumping to conclusions about the temp sensor, could you share: Current mileage? When was your last transmission service? Any fluid leaks you've noticed on your driveway? Let me know and I can share more specific details about my experience!

Thanks for chiming in! Mine's running at 106502 KM and had its last service about 8 months ago. Haven't spotted any obvious leaks, but I'll definitely check the transmission fluid levels. Your Boxster issue sounds pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. Really appreciate the heads up about checking the fluid first, might save me some headaches. Did you notice any particular warning signs before the shifting got really bad?

Hey again! Thanks for asking about the warning signs. Yeah, with my Boxster, I actually did notice some subtle hints before it got really bad. Around the 100K mark, I started getting this slight hesitation between shifts, especially when the car was cold. At first, I thought I was just being paranoid, but then it got progressively worse over about 2-3 weeks. The really interesting thing is that your mileage (106502 KM) is pretty close to where mine started acting up. In my case, even though I had the service done, it turned out there was a small leak from one of the transmission seals that was slowly letting fluid escape, not enough to leave obvious puddles, but enough to cause issues over time. Quick tip from my experience, try paying attention to how it behaves during cold starts versus when the car's warmed up. With mine, the symptoms were definitely worse in the morning, and they'd somewhat improve after driving for a while. That's actually what threw me off initially about the temp sensor theory. I'd still recommend getting those fluid levels checked ASAP though. Don't want to risk any serious transmission damage, these Porsche gearboxes aren't cheap to rebuild! Let me know what you find out, I'm really curious if it's similar to what I dealt with.

Really appreciate the detailed breakdown of your experience! That's super helpful, especially the bit about the cold starts, now that you mention it, mine's definitely worse in the mornings too. I'm going to get it into the shop first thing tomorrow to check those fluid levels and look for any sneaky leaks around the seals. You've probably saved me a bunch of time and money by sharing your experience, was honestly convinced it was the temp sensor! I'll definitely update the thread once I find out what's actually going on with mine. Thanks again for taking the time to share all this info, it's exactly what I was hoping to learn when I posted.
