Celica Brake Fluid Low

Hey, I've got a 2005 Toyota Celica with a gasoline engine and I'm seeing some weirdness. The brake fluid warning light came on, and I noticed the brake fluid level is pretty low. I'm also getting strange feedback from the brake pedal. I'm thinking maybe it's just worn brakes, but any ideas?

I had a similar issue with my Celica, though it's an older model. A low brake fluid warning light usually means there's a leak somewhere in the system, or that your brake pads are very worn. As the pads wear down, the pistons in your brake calipers have to extend further to press the pads against the rotors. This requires more brake fluid from the master cylinder, which lowers the level in the reservoir. Have you checked your brake pads recently?

Good point. I haven't checked the pads closely yet. If it's not the pads, what else could cause the fluid to drop? Is the master cylinder a common culprit in these cars?

If it's not the pads, then a leak is the next most likely thing. Check around each wheel for any signs of fluid. The master cylinder itself could be leaking internally, but that's less common. Given the symptoms, I'd recommend a thorough brake inspection at a workshop to be sure. It's better to be safe when it comes to brakes.

Thanks for the advice! I took it to a shop, and you were right – the front brakes were completely worn. New pads and rotors all around plus a fluid flush. Ended up costing me 480€, but at least I know it's sorted.
