Celica Fuel Pump Connector Issue
Summary of the thread
The 2005 Toyota Celica was experiencing starting issues, stalling, rough engine performance, and increased fuel consumption, with the check engine light on and error codes present. The initial suspicion was a faulty fuel pump, but it was suggested to check the wiring and fuel pump relay first, as a bad relay or clogged fuel filter could also cause similar symptoms. After further investigation by a mechanic, the issue was identified as a bad electrical connector on the fuel pump, which was replaced, resolving the problem.

Thanks. Can you tell me how to test the fuel pump relay? What should I measure, and what's a good range? Also, how can I tell if it's a bad fuel filter or the fuel pump causing the problem, just from the symptoms and error codes?

To check the relay, use a multimeter to test for voltage at the relay when the ignition is on. You should see about 12V. Also, check the relay's continuity – a good relay will have low resistance. It’s hard to tell between a fuel filter and a pump. A clogged filter usually causes a gradual loss of performance and fuel pressure, but a failing pump can be erratic. Given the symptoms and error codes, I'd take it to a shop for a proper diagnosis. Rule out other issues before replacing the pump. A replacement will cost around 95€, so check everything else first.

Thanks for the help. I took it to a mechanic, and they found a bad electrical connector on the fuel pump. They replaced it, and it fixed the problem. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

A bad fuel pump could cause those problems, especially the stalling and no-start. The check engine light and error codes suggest a fuel system issue. But check the wiring first. Have you checked the fuel pump relay and its wiring? A bad relay can act like a bad pump. Also, check the fuel filter. A clogged filter makes the pump work harder, which could damage it. Is the increased fuel consumption sudden or gradual?
