Check Engine Light and Exhaust Smell Mini Clubman

My 2009 Mini Clubman is showing a check engine light. Getting rough engine running, exhaust leaking and a strong exhaust smell. Suspect exhaust treatment malfunction. Could this be related to the particulate filter or NOx sensors? Or maybe the oxygen sensor? Any ideas?

Engine light and rough running sounds familiar. I had similar symptoms with my Clubman. Did you check the lambda sensors? Mine was throwing codes related to exhaust treatment malfunction too.

Interesting. Which lambda sensor was the culprit for you? And did it also cause a strong exhaust smell? I am getting that too now.

Mine was the upstream oxygen sensor. The exhaust smell was definitely there. If it is the same for you, it might be worth getting it checked by a workshop, especially if you're getting exhaust fumes inside the cabin.

Problem solved. Turned out to be a defective lambda sensor as suspected. Replaced it, and the engine light is gone. Runs smoothly again. Cost 375€ Thanks for the heads up.
