Check engine light and performance problems in the Toyota Corolla 2008: Possible causes and solutions

Hey guys, I have a problem with my 2008 Toyota Corolla, gasoline engine, which has run 158589 km. The check engine light comes on, the engine just shuts off, the cold start takes longer, there is loss of engine power, the engine runs rough and sometimes the car won't start at all. I suspect it could be the camshaft sensor. Have any of you had similar experiences and could tell me about your visit to the garage? I didn't have such a good experience last time, so I'd like to know if anyone has had a similar experience and how it was resolved. Would be very grateful for any advice!

Summary of the thread

A 2008 Toyota Corolla is experiencing several issues: the check engine light is on, the engine shuts off unexpectedly, cold starts take longer, there's a loss of engine power, the engine runs rough, and sometimes the car won't start. The suspected cause is a faulty camshaft sensor. A similar case with a 2005 Toyota Yaris revealed that both the camshaft sensor and the encoder wheel on the camshaft needed replacement to resolve the issue. The suggested solution is to visit a garage for diagnosis and repair, focusing on these components.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey, had a similar problem with my 2005 Toyota Yaris. And yes, it was quite a blow. Mine also ran pretty rough and had problems with cold starts. At the garage, they discovered that it was actually the camshaft sensor. However, the encoder wheel on the camshaft was also defective. Both had to be replaced to fix the problem. To be honest, it was no child's play. If you have similar symptoms, it could be the same problem. So, off to the garage and hope it's not too bad. All the best, buddy!

Hey, thanks for your help! It sounds like you had a really tough time with your Yaris! One more question, do you happen to remember how much you paid for it? And since you fixed it, has anything else popped up, or is the engine running seamlessly now? Would love to get more details as I'm really unsure how to approach this right now. Anyway, thanks in advance!

Moin, yes of course, I can tell you. Well, the problem with the camshaft sensor, the proverbial malfunction, was fixed when I went to the mechanic, thank God! Since then, my Yaris has been running like clockwork again. And the price... well, it cost me 695€ to repair the encoder wheel on the camshaft. It wasn't cheap fun. But I haven't had any further problems since the repair. I hope this helps you and you can get your Corolla back on track!

Hey, thanks for all the info! 695€, huh... That's really no bargain, but I'm relieved to hear that your Yaris didn't have any further problems after that. I'll try to get my Corolla into the garage as soon as possible and hopefully the problem will be solved just like yours. Thanks again for your help and keep your fingers crossed that I don't encounter any more surprises!
