Chevrolet N400 Serpentine Belt Tensioner Failure
Summary of the thread
A 2020 Chevrolet N400 with nearly 50,000 km experienced a failure in the serpentine belt tensioner, causing the belt to lose tension. This issue was identified as a defective tensioner, which led to the belt slipping. The suggested solution was to replace the entire tensioner, as the spring mechanism had failed. Following this advice, the tensioner was replaced, resolving the problem.

Precisely! The serpentine belt tensioner is indeed the component causing the problem. The 'handover' I mentioned is a crude term for its failure to maintain tension. Are you suggesting your N400 had a complete tensioner failure, necessitating replacement, or was there some other underlying cause?

In my case, the entire tensioner had to be replaced. The spring mechanism within it gave way, and the belt kept slipping. Considering the symptoms, your mileage, and the fact that you've identified the tensioner, I'd advise taking it to a trusted workshop to assess the damage. It's likely a complete replacement is needed.

Much obliged for the insight! It appears a trip to the workshop was unavoidable. Following your advice, I had the tensioner replaced; the total cost was approximately 455€. The root cause was indeed a defective tensioner. Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction!

I had a similar issue on my N400. By belt-handover, are you referring to the serpentine belt tensioner's ability to maintain proper belt tension? If so, listen for any unusual engine noise or squealing, especially around the idler pulley and tensioner pulley. A failing tensioner can cause the serpentine belt to slip or even come off, which could explain the handover problem. The tensioner pulley ensures the timing belt and other engine components run smoothly.
