CHR Power Steering Issue

I'm writing to report an issue with my 2016 Toyota CHR, gasoline engine. It has 161406 km on the odometer. I've noticed a fault with the power steering. The steering wheel vibrates and shakes, the handling feels spongy, and there's an error code stored. Sometimes it's hard to steer, like the power steering is failing. I've checked fluid levels, but I can't do much more myself. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Summary of the thread

A 2016 Toyota CHR with 161,406 km is experiencing power steering issues, including a vibrating steering wheel, spongy handling, and difficulty steering, especially at low speeds. The problem may be linked to a defective cable or plug connection, as indicated by an error code. It is suggested to have the vehicle inspected at a workshop, focusing on these connections, as a potential cost-effective solution before considering more expensive repairs like the steering pump.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hey there! I had a similar problem with my CHR not too long ago. The vibrating steering wheel and spongy handling sound awfully familiar. Did you notice if it was worse at low speeds, like when you're parking? Also, have you had the wheel alignment checked recently? That can sometimes throw things off.

Thanks for the response! Yes, the issue seems more pronounced at lower speeds, particularly when maneuvering in parking lots. As for the wheel alignment, it hasn't been checked recently. Could a misalignment really affect the power steering system's performance like this?

Yep, low speed issues were exactly what I experienced! As for the wheel alignment, it could be a contributing factor, but in my case, a defective cable or plug connection was the problem. The error memory pointed directly to it. I'd suggest taking it to a workshop to get the connections checked first. A quick diagnostic and cable replacement cost me around 95€. Worth a shot before you look at something more expensive like the steering pump.

Thanks for your help and for sharing your experience! Based on your recommendation, I'll have the vehicle inspected at a workshop, focusing on the cable and plug connections related to the power steering. Given the error code and the potential cost-effective fix you described, it seems like a logical first step. Thanks again.
