Chrysler 300 DPF Issues: Black Smoke & Power Loss

My Chrysler 300 diesel from 2004 (96500km) is giving me trouble lately. Engine power drops significantly and I notice dark smoke coming from the exhaust system when I hit the gas. Pretty sure its related to the DPF but my last mechanic visit wasnt great so Im hesitant to go back. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Did you need a filter replacement or was DPF cleaning enough to solve it? Looking for recommendations on what to check first.

Had similar issues with a 2007 Chrysler Sebring diesel at 110000km. The symptoms match exactly what you describe, power loss and black exhaust smoke under acceleration. The engine light came on intermittently during highway drives. A vehicle inspection revealed the diesel filter was completely clogged, blocking proper exhaust flow. DPF cleaning was attempted first but didnt solve the underlying issue. The sensor fault readings showed the filter had experienced too many incomplete regeneration cycles. The full DPF replacement was necessary as the internal honeycomb structure was damaged beyond repair. This was a serious repair job requiring about 6 hours of labor since the exhaust system needed partial dismantling to access the filter assembly. Before replacement, check these first: Run the engine at 2500 RPM for 15 minutes to trigger manual regeneration, Have the DPF pressure sensor tested for accurate readings, Check engine oil level and quality, Verify no fuel system issues causing incomplete combustion If these checks dont improve performance, prepare for filter replacement. Regular highway driving helps prevent future DPF issues by allowing proper regeneration cycles.

Thanks for the detailed response about the DPF issues. Your experience matches what Im going through with my Chrysler 300. Would you remember roughly how much the exhaust system work and filter replacement ended up costing? Also curious if youve had any similar sensor fault codes or DPF problems since getting it fixed? Hoping to avoid future issues by understanding what preventive steps worked for you.

After the initial DPF troubles with my Chrysler, I had the filter completely replaced which cost 1550€ including labor. The high backpressure readings and engine light issues completely disappeared after the repair. The exhaust system has been working flawlessly since then. To prevent future DPF problems, I now make sure to: Take regular highway trips to maintain proper regeneration cycles, Use high-quality diesel fuel only, Keep up with oil change intervals, Monitor fuel efficiency closely Its been 2 years since the replacement and the engine performance remains strong with no warning lights or power loss issues. The investment in a quality DPF repair job was worth it for the improved reliability and peace of mind. Just make sure to find a shop experienced with diesel particulate filter work. Getting it done right the first time helps avoid repeated issues down the road.

Thanks for the input. I finally took my Chrysler to a new mechanic specializing in diesel engines. The diagnosis confirmed what you mentioned, a severely clogged diesel filter causing the power loss and smoke issues. The total repair came to 1680€ including a complete filter replacement and exhaust system inspection. They found the old DPF was beyond cleaning due to damage from multiple incomplete regeneration cycles. Been about 3 weeks since the repair and the engine light hasnt come back on. Power delivery is smooth again and no more black smoke from the exhaust. The fuel efficiency has improved noticeably too. Following the advice about prevention, I now take weekly highway drives and switched to premium diesel. The mechanic set up my next service appointment to check the DPF sensors and pressure readings. Definitely learned my lesson about not ignoring early warning signs of filter problems.
