Thanks for the detailed response The brake calipers gliding smoothly is a great point that I'll check Regarding the rotors is there a reliable way to check for warping besides just visual inspection And when you mention 'measuring the thickness at multiple points' are we talking thousandths of an inch or just a general 'thicker on one side' kind of difference

You are most welcome Regarding the brake rotors while a visual inspection may reveal obvious warping subtle deviations often require the use of a dial indicator This tool measures runout or the amount of wobble in the rotor as it rotates A runout exceeding the manufacturer's specifications indicates warping As for measuring brake pad thickness precise measurements are indeed necessary While a general visual assessment can identify gross disparities a precise measurement with a vernier caliper is recommended Look for differences on the order of a millimeter or less between different points on the same pad Even minor variations can contribute to the symptoms you are experiencing Considering the age and mileage of your vehicle a thorough inspection by a qualified technician is highly advisable They possess the expertise and equipment to accurately diagnose the issue and recommend the appropriate course of action I highly suggest to get it checked at the repair shop

Time to report back Took it to my usual shop and as suspected it was an undervoltage issue causing havoc with the ABS module The module was intermittently sending strange signals to the braking system hence the weird pedal feel They reset the system did a full diagnostic check and everything seems back to normal Total cost 240€ Thanks again for your help

I understand you are experiencing unusual feedback from your brake pedal in your Mercedes Citan A similar issue presented itself in my previous vehicle the 2018 Volvo XC60 The symptoms you describe particularly the unusual vibration are noteworthy In my case the root cause was traced to uneven wear of the brake pads which propagated vibrations through the brake lines and into the pedal While you mention that your pads appear to be in reasonable condition it would be prudent to measure their thickness at multiple points to ensure uniform wear Also have you inspected the brake rotors for any signs of warping or damage Warped rotors can also induce vibrations that are felt through the brake pedal Finally ensure your brake calipers glide smoothly on their pins A seized caliper can cause uneven brake pad wear and subsequent vibration If the calipers are sticking they may require cleaning and lubrication or even replacement I hope this helps
