Citan engine stalling and check engine light

My 2023 Mercedes Citan, gasoline engine, is giving me fits. It has 197177 km on the clock and now the check engine light is on. The engine starts rough, then stalls at idle. I suspect it's the camshaft sensor; could it be a defective encoder wheel on the camshafts? Has anyone else experienced this? Could it be related to the crankshaft sensor?

I had a similar issue with my Citan. Check engine light came on and the car was stalling. It might be worth doing some sensor testing before you go any further.

Sensor testing? What kind of sensor testing are we talking about? And which sensor specifically? I mean, could it really be the encoder wheel on the camshaft? Did you have the same issues with starting and stalling?

Yes, I had the same starting and stalling. I would get it to a workshop and have them diagnose it. In my case, it was the camshaft sensor. I know it’s a pain.

You were spot on! Took it to the workshop, and they confirmed it was the camshaft sensor. Apparently, the encoder wheel was indeed defective. Repair cost me 695€. Thanks for the advice; at least I knew what to expect!
