Citan park brake shift lock problem

My Mercedes Citan, a 2015 diesel, is playing up big time. It's stuck in what I think is park. The engine won't even start, the check engine light's glaring, and the gearbox was slipping. My mechanic says it's probably a dodgy control unit causing transmission failure and that it'll be about 1000€ to fix. Anyone else had this park brake shift lock nightmare?

I understand your frustration. I had a similar issue with my Citan. The symptoms you describe mirror my experience almost exactly. Have you checked the neutral position? Sometimes, if the gear shifter isn't perfectly aligned, it can trigger the shift lock and prevent the engine from starting. Also, was there any error stored in the error memory?

Thanks for the reply! I did try the neutral position, but no luck. And yes, there IS an error stored in the error memory. What did you end up doing to fix yours?

Given that you've tried the neutral position and there's an error code, it does sound like the control unit issue your mechanic mentioned is the most likely culprit for the transmission failure. In my case, unfortunately, it required a visit to a workshop for diagnosis and repair. Considering the potential complexity of automatic transmissions, I would strongly suggest seeking professional assistance to avoid further complications.

Thanks so much for confirming my fears, haha! I took it to the workshop, and you were spot on – it WAS the control unit. 1000€ later, and she's running like a dream. Appreciate the help!
