Citroen C2 (year 2004) loses power and has increased fuel consumption

Hi folks, I've been having problems with my Citroen C2 (built in 2004, gasoline engine, already 113,351 kilometers down) for some time now. It loses power, twitches when accelerating, guzzles a lot of fuel and smokes black smoke from the exhaust. The check engine light is also flashing. I suspect the lambda sensor is old shit. Has anyone here had similar problems with their car? Would like to know what your mechanics have said about this, after my last experience I've become a bit suspicious. Many thanks in advance!

Summary of the thread

A Citroen C2 from 2004 is experiencing power loss, increased fuel consumption, and black smoke from the exhaust, with the check engine light flashing. The suspected cause is a faulty lambda sensor, which can lead to these symptoms. A similar issue was resolved in another Citroen model by replacing the clogged lambda sensor, resulting in improved performance and fuel efficiency. It is recommended to have the lambda sensor checked and replaced if necessary.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Hi, I have the Citroen C5 (built in 2007) and actually had the same problems as you. My car wasn't running properly either and the check engine light kept coming on. I also thought it was the lambda sensor. I then went to the garage and they confirmed that the ceramic inside the lambda sensor was clogged. It was a real bummer because it meant that my car consumed more fuel and could no longer deliver full power. Fortunately, it wasn't a major problem. They simply replaced the lambda sensor and then everything ran smoothly again. So I would recommend that you have this checked on your car. Best regards!

Wow, sounds like exactly the same problem I'm having with my C2 at the moment. Thanks for your advice, I'll pop into the garage and have the lambda sensor checked. Do you remember what you had to pay to have the lambda sensor replaced? And has anything else come up since then or is your Citroen now running like clockwork again? Thanks and best regards!

Hey, yes, I remember the costs well - replacing the lambda sensor cost me around €375, I had to swallow, to be honest. The ceramic inside the lambda sensor was really dirty and clogged, so the cost was higher. But since then, my Citroen C5 has been like a new car. No more problems with performance or high fuel consumption. Best wishes and keep your chin up, it'll be fine!

Hey! 375€, that sounds like quite a lot of money... Well, if it helps and I don't have any more problems afterwards, that's probably the best solution. Thanks for your help and good advice. I'll pay a visit to my mechanic and get that sorted. Greetings and thanks again, you've really helped me. Now I'm a bit more reassured. Everything will be fine!
