Citroen C3 Crankshaft Sensor Issue

I'm hitting a wall with my 2014 Citroen C3 diesel. The check engine light is on, and the engine feels like it's lost half its pep. I'm getting terrible engine response, and my fuel consumption is through the roof! The mechanic's diagnostics point to a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' issue. I'm thinking it could be engine synchronization, crankshaft or camshaft sensors, or even the timing belt... Has anyone else wrestled with this? Mileage is at 175396 km. Any hints before I sell my soul to fix this?

Summary of the thread

A 2014 Citroen C3 diesel is experiencing poor engine performance, high fuel consumption, and a check engine light, with diagnostics indicating a 'Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value' issue. Possible causes include engine synchronization problems, faulty crankshaft or camshaft sensors, or a timing belt issue. A similar case with a Renault Megane pointed to a faulty crankshaft sensor, leading to the suggestion of a proper diagnostic check. Ultimately, replacing the crankshaft sensor resolved the issue, restoring the car's performance.

Sounds rough! I had a similar saga with my old Renault Megane, although mine was petrol. Same symptoms: engine light, sluggish performance. The error code was related to timing too. Turned out to be a faulty crankshaft sensor messing everything up. Is it worth checking that?

Cheers for the quick reply! So, it was definitely the crankshaft sensor then? Did you try any other troubleshooting steps, or did you just replace it straight away?

Yep, crankshaft sensor was the culprit on my Megane. I initially suspected the camshaft sensor, but after checking the wiring and signal from the crankshaft sensor, it was clearly the problem. Honestly, without proper diagnostic tools, it’s a bit of a gamble just throwing parts at it. I’d recommend getting a proper diagnosis from a decent workshop to be 100% sure.

Thanks a bunch! I took your advice and went to the workshop. Turns out you were spot on! It was indeed the crankshaft sensor that was defective. They replaced it, and the car is running smoothly again. Total cost: 340€. You saved me a load of stress!
