Citroen C4 diesel particulate filter issue
Summary of the thread
The 2005 Citroen C4 diesel is experiencing reduced engine power and excessive smoke, potentially linked to a diesel particulate filter (DPF) issue. Possible causes include a clogged DPF or faulty sensors affecting regeneration. Solutions suggested include forcing a regeneration and checking the exhaust system for leaks or sensor faults. Ultimately, a workshop inspection confirmed a defective DPF, which was repaired, resolving the problem.

I haven't tried forcing a regeneration myself, no. I'm not really sure how to do that safely. The exhaust system hasn't been checked recently either. Could a faulty sensor really cause so much trouble? How does it affect fuel efficiency?

A faulty sensor upstream of the DPF can definitely mess with the readings and prevent proper regeneration, leading to a clogged filter and those symptoms you described. If you are not familiar with forced regeneration, I'd strongly recommend a vehicle inspection in a workshop, as forcing regeneration with underlying issues can cause more damage.

Thank you for the advice. I took your advice and brought it to a trusted workshop. Turns out the diesel particulate filter was indeed defective. The repair set me back 1550€, but at least it's running smoothly again.

Sounds like it could very well be a DPF issue. Have you tried forcing a regeneration? Also, when was the last time you had the exhaust system checked for leaks or sensor faults? Ignoring those could cause DPF issues as well.
