Citroen C4 Gear Shift Indicator Problem

My 2006 Citroen C4 with a gasoline engine has a gear shift indicator display that's stopped working. It's hard to shift smoothly, and the automatic transmission is shifting weirdly. The gearbox seems to slip and shifts uncleanly, with grinding noises. An error is stored, and the gear selection display is non-functional. Anyone seen this?
