Citroen C4 Intermittent Starting Issue

Hi, I'm having a weird issue with my 2005 Citroen C4 (gasoline engine). It's got about 125k km on it. Sometimes it just won't start, other times it starts then shuts off while driving. When it runs it will occasionally run very rough. I've checked the battery and I don't think it's the starter motor since it does crank sometimes. Could it be a fuse? Any ideas?

I had similar problems with my old Opel Astra. It turned out to be an intermittent ignition switch. It was acting like a bad connection, cutting power to the ignition coil at random times. Is your dashboard light flickering, similar to when you first put the ignition key in? That could be a sign.

Interesting. I haven't specifically noticed flickering, but I'll pay closer attention. When you say ignition switch, are we talking about the whole assembly where the key goes in? And how did you finally diagnose it?

Yes, the whole assembly. Think of it like a leaky faucet – sometimes it drips, sometimes it doesn't. That's what the switch can do: sometimes it makes contact, sometimes it doesn't. In my case, it got so bad that the car became undrivable. Eventually, I took it to a workshop, and they diagnosed it with an electrical tester tool in about 20 mins.

Thanks for the tip! I checked and some fuses were defective. Replaced it for 52€. Runs like new now!
