Citroen C5 Generator Failure
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Citroen C5 diesel with 243,001 km is experiencing generator failure, leading to reduced engine power, warning lights, reluctant starts, and flickering lights. The issue is confirmed by error memory indicating a defective generator. Suggested solutions include checking the serpentine belt and voltage levels, as well as inspecting for corroded contacts. Ultimately, the problem was resolved by replacing the generator at a workshop.

Regarding the voltage, I'm not entirely sure how to check that accurately. And where exactly should I be looking for these 'corroded contacts'? Could you explain it a bit more simply?

Think of your car's charging system like a water pump trying to fill a leaky bucket (the battery). If the pump is weak (alternator failing) or the bucket has too many holes (corroded contacts causing resistance), you won't get a full bucket. Regarding your voltage test, without proper tools, it is going to be difficult. Regarding where the corroded contacts could be, it is difficult to determine without seeing the vehicle. Considering what you have described, it sounds like you may need an alternator replacement soon. Given the described symptoms, it might be best to visit a workshop. It is most likely a defective generator. The repair cost will be around 960€.

I'll take your recommendation and bring it to the workshop. They confirmed that it was, in fact, the generator. Cost me 960€ in the end!

Generator failure on a C5 is not unheard of, though the symptoms you describe could stem from a few different sources. First, check the serpentine belt. If it's worn or loose, it won't properly drive the alternator. Also, what's the voltage doing when the engine is running? A significant voltage drop could point to a failing alternator, but could also be due to corroded contacts.
