Oil sludge is a good point. I haven't specifically looked for that yet. Where exactly should I be checking for sludge buildup?

On the Volvo, it was pretty evident under the valve cover and around the camshaft area. Since you suspect the VANOS solenoid, check around that area first. Honestly, though, if you're not comfortable digging too deep, it might be worth getting a professional to take a look. Could save you a bigger headache down the line.

It ended up being exactly what I suspected - the inlet camshaft solenoid valve was toast. Replaced it, and the check engine light is gone, and fuel consumption is back to normal. Cost me about 250€.

Sounds familiar. I had a similar issue with my old Volvo V70. Same symptoms: check engine light, terrible fuel economy. For me, it was definitely related to the VANOS system. Have you checked for any signs of oil sludge? That can muck things up pretty badly.
