Civic Hybrid Rough Running P0171

I'm having a head-scratcher with my 2022 Honda Civic Hybrid. It's got about 151,749 km on the clock and recently it's started running really rough. The check engine light is on, and I scanned it and there's an error stored. The worst part is the jerking – especially when I'm trying to accelerate! It feels like it's struggling. I've checked the usual suspects, like making sure all the spark plugs are seated correctly, but nothing seems obviously wrong. Could it be something serious like the crankshaft sensor or the timing belt?

Summary of the thread

A 2022 Honda Civic Hybrid was experiencing rough running and jerking during acceleration, with a check engine light indicating error code P0171, which means 'System Too Lean (Bank 1)'. Possible causes for this issue included a small exhaust leak before the oxygen sensor or a failing ignition coil. The suggested solution was to have a mechanic perform a smoke test to identify any exhaust leaks and check the ignition coils. The problem was resolved by fixing a small exhaust leak and replacing a failing ignition coil, resulting in the car running smoothly again.

Did this summary help you solve your problem?

Rough running and jerking on acceleration with a check engine light on your 2022 Civic Hybrid could stem from a few things. Since you've already checked the plugs, that's a good start. The error code you pulled is key here – what exactly does it say? A leak in the exhaust system can also cause uneven running, as this affects the oxygen sensor readings. Alternatively, it could be an ignition coil failing, but without knowing the specific error code, it's hard to say for sure. Has the car had any recent work done, like an oil change or anything else that might be related?

Thanks for the quick reply! I should have mentioned the error code - it's P0171, which I think means 'System Too Lean (Bank 1)'. I haven't done any work on the car recently, apart from topping up the windshield washer fluid. Could a small exhaust leak really cause such a big problem? Also, how can I check the ignition coils without special equipment?

Okay, P0171 on a Honda Civic Hybrid does point towards a lean condition. Given the symptoms, mileage, and the code, a small exhaust leak before the oxygen sensor is a very plausible cause. It can throw off the sensor readings and cause the engine to run rough. Checking ignition coils properly usually requires testing equipment. However, due to your limited experience, it's best to bring the car to a trusted workshop. They can do a smoke test to find the leak, and then diagnose the faulty ignition coils and replace them if necessary.

Thanks a lot for your help! I took it to my local mechanic, and you were spot on – it was a small leak in the exhaust system right before the oxygen sensor. They fixed it and also found one of the ignition coils was starting to fail, so I had them replace that too. Total cost was 265€, but the car runs like new again! Really appreciate the advice; it saved me a lot of time and stress.
