CLA Automatic Gearbox Torque Converter Issue

My 2015 Mercedes CLA with a gasoline engine has an automatic gearbox issue. I'm getting a check engine light and transmission indicator. Shifts are unclean, almost like it's slipping, and there's a grinding noise sometimes when it changes gear. The codes point to a defective torque converter lock-up clutch. Has anyone else experienced this?

Sounds familiar. I have a Mercedes as well, though not the CLA. I had similar symptoms a while back, and it turned out to be a converter fault in my automatic transmission. Unclean shifts and grinding noises are dead giveaways. Have you checked the transmission fluid level and condition?

Fluid level is good, and the fluid itself doesn't look burnt or contaminated. When you say converter fault, was it definitely the lock-up clutch, or something else within the torque converter?

It was the torque converter itself, though I can't recall specifically if the lock-up clutch was the primary culprit, or if other components inside the converter had also failed. Given the symptoms and the error code you mentioned, it's highly likely the torque converter is the source of your woes. Best bet is to get it diagnosed at a workshop. They'll be able to pinpoint the exact issue.

Thanks for the insight. Took it to a transmission specialist, and you were spot on. They confirmed the torque converter was the problem. Repair cost me 2120€, but at least it's sorted now.
