Clio belt handover failure
Summary of the thread
A 2006 Renault Clio owner reported a failure in the belt handover system, suspecting the belt bringer/handover component. A possible cause identified was a faulty belt tensioner, which could lead to decreased engine performance. It was advised to check the tensioner pulley for wear or seizure, but due to the complexity and need for specific tools, professional repair was recommended. The owner confirmed the issue was with the belt tensioner and arranged for its replacement at a workshop.

Thanks for the quick reply! No squealing, but performance is definitely down. Where exactly should I be looking for the tensioner pulley? Is it something easily visible or will I need to take some parts off?

Given the performance drop and non-functional handover, a defective tensioner is very likely. Locating it precisely depends on the engine variant, but generally, you'll find it near the timing belt. Without specific tools or experience, it's best left to a workshop. The repair cost could be around 455€ depending on parts and labor.

Alright, thanks for confirming my suspicions. I was hoping it was a simple fix, but I'll book it into the shop. They confirmed it was the belt tensioner and it's getting replaced. Cheers!

Sounds like a faulty belt tensioner. Is the belt squealing, or have you noticed any drop in engine performance? Check the tensioner pulley; it might be worn or seized.
