Clio Brake Light Failure

I've got a 2001 Renault Clio diesel with 165310 km on the clock. Recently, I've been getting a brake light failure error message on the dash. My OBD reader shows an error related to the brake light switch. All three brake lights are out. I checked the bulbs, and they're fine. I'm thinking it's a faulty switch, but is there anything else I should check before replacing it?

I had a similar issue with my Clio. If the error code specifically points to the brake light switch, it's highly likely that's the culprit. The switch is a small component, usually located near the brake pedal. Sometimes, they can get dislodged or wear out. Before buying a new one, check if it's properly connected and not loose. It's a simple automotive switch, like any other in your car. Have you checked the fuse? A blown fuse can cause the same symptoms and error message in the infotainment system.

Thanks for the tip! I did check the connection, and it seems secure. Where exactly is the fuse located, and which one is it? I'm not sure I looked at the right one. Could user error cause the fuse to blow? I was doing some work on the tail lights recently.

The fuse box is usually under the dashboard, near the steering wheel, or in the engine compartment. The specific fuse for the brake lights should be indicated in the owner's manual. If you were messing with the tail lights, it's definitely possible you caused a short circuit, blowing the fuse. The brake system is quite sensitive. I would check the fuses and go to the workshop.

Thanks a bunch! It turned out to be the fuse! I must have shorted something when I was changing the tail light bulbs. Replaced the fuse, and all is good now. Cost me nothing! Appreciate the help!
