Clio Camshaft Sensor Failure

I'm having trouble with my 2004 Renault Clio (gasoline engine). It has 187633 km. It's hard to start, stalls a lot (especially when idling), and the check engine light is on. My diagnostic tools say it's a bad camshaft sensor, but I think the encoder wheel on the camshafts might be the real problem. Has anyone else had this?

That sounds familiar. My old Opel Corsa had similar problems. It stalled a lot, and the engine light was always on. Did you try the crankshaft sensor? Sometimes a bad crankshaft sensor causes similar issues, so it might be worth checking before you replace the camshaft sensor.

Thanks. I haven't tested the crankshaft sensor because the first diagnostics pointed to the camshaft sensor. But I'm open to looking into it. What crankshaft sensor tests did you do, and did you get any camshaft error codes?

I didn't do any tests myself. I'm not a mechanic and took the Corsa to a shop. My car had similar symptoms, but I don't know the codes. Since you've already checked some things, it might be best to get a professional to look at it, especially if you think the encoder wheel is the issue.

I appreciate the Opel Corsa experience. I took your advice and talked to a mechanic. It was a bad camshaft sensor, and the encoder wheel was the problem. The total cost was 695€.
