My Clio has around 124894 km on the clock. Did yours have the same mileage? Also, what exactly happened in your case? Was it definitely the EGR valve, and what did you do to fix it?

Mileage is about right, I think mine was about the same when it started acting up, too. Based on my experience and the issues you're describing, it is very likely the EGR valve. Given the complexity of the system and potential for further damage, I'd strongly advise taking it to a trusted mechanic. They can accurately diagnose the problem and replace the valve if necessary.

Thanks a lot for your help and insight! I booked it in with my local garage. Turns out you were spot on, the EGR valve was completely shot and jammed open. They replaced the valve and did a full diagnostic check. Cost me around 355€, but the car's running like a dream now!

I understand your frustration. I had a similar experience with my Clio, although it's a newer model. The symptoms you describe – reduced power, check engine light, smoke, rough running – strongly suggest an issue with the EGR valve. The hissing sound could indicate a vacuum leak in the EGR system, further supporting this diagnosis. What mileage are you at?
