Clio Key Battery Warning

My 2018 Renault Clio with a gasoline engine is showing a 'key battery low' warning. Keyless access isn't working, and there's an error in the car's computer. Unlocking and locking are also faulty. Could this just be the key battery, or are there other potential problems?

Sounds like the key fob battery is dead. My old Megane did the same. Does the Clio have a slot in the dash to put the key in? Some Renaults do that to override a flat key battery. If it starts in the slot, it's likely the battery. Have you tried the spare key to see if it does the same thing?

Thanks. The Clio doesn't have a slot for the key. The spare key has the same problem. Could both batteries really be dead?

That's bad luck, but yes, both batteries could be flat, especially if the spare hasn't been used. They discharge over time. I'd still bet on the batteries. Get your local garage to test the keys and replace the batteries. It should be quick.

Thanks for the advice. I had the key fob batteries replaced at my local mechanic. It cost 37€ and fixed the problem. Both keys work now.
