CMAX Intermittent Engine Light
Summary of the thread
The 2004 Ford CMAX experienced an intermittent check engine light, suspected to be caused by an air valve issue, possibly due to a defective hose connection from the pump to the valve. A similar issue was resolved by addressing a cracked hose causing a vacuum leak, which can affect the air mixture and engine performance. Inspection of hoses connected to the air intake and valve was recommended, with signs of damage including brittleness or hissing sounds. The problem was confirmed and resolved at a workshop by repairing the defective hose connection, resulting in the engine light turning off.

Thank you for the information. Which specific hoses should I inspect more closely? Are there any telltale signs of damage, besides obvious cracks?

The hose running directly from the air pump to the air valve is the prime suspect, but inspect all connected to the intake manifold, too. Feel them for brittleness or listen for hissing when the engine is running – that’s like the snake in the grass, revealing the leak. Honestly, though, if you're not comfortable with that, a workshop will pinpoint it in minutes. I ended up replacing the valve and some hoses after a mechanic confirmed it.

I appreciate the advice. I took it to a workshop; the hose connection from the pump to the valve was indeed defective. The repair, including parts and labor, amounted to 175€. The engine light is now off. Thanks again!

I had a similar issue with my CMAX. The engine light was on and off like a faulty disco ball. It turned out to be a cracked hose causing a vacuum leak. Think of it like a tiny hole in a balloon - the engine doesn't get the correct air mixture. It can mess with the idle and even cause the engine to stall. Have you checked all the hoses connected to the air intake and valve?
