CMAX poor start high fuel consumption
Summary of the thread
A 2013 Ford CMAX owner reported issues with poor starting and increased fuel consumption, suspecting a defective throttle valve or accelerator pedal module. Another individual suggested checking for excessive carbon buildup in the throttle body, which could affect air intake and engine idle. While cleaning the throttle body might offer temporary relief, a workshop visit for proper diagnosis and potential replacement of the accelerator pedal module was recommended. Ultimately, the issue was resolved by replacing the accelerator pedal module, resulting in improved vehicle performance.

Thanks for the tip. I'll check the throttle body for buildup. But if cleaning doesn't solve it, and it's indeed the accelerator pedal module, is replacement the only option? How did you solve your problem?

Well, in my case, cleaning provided only temporary relief. The issue kept returning after a while. Considering the potential impact on fuel consumption and starting issues, I would recommend a workshop visit. They can properly diagnose the accelerator pedal module using diagnostic tools. In the end, I had to replace the accelerator pedal module.

Understood, thanks for sharing your experience! Just got the car back from the shop. Indeed it was the accelerator pedal module, total cost was 205€. Runs much better now.

Hey there! I had a similar issue with my CMAX, though I can't recall if the engine type was exactly the same. The symptoms sound very familiar. Have you checked the throttle body for excessive carbon buildup? That can mess with the air intake and engine idle, leading to those problems. It might be worth trying a throttle cleaning before diving into replacing parts.
