Cobalt Boost Pressure Malfunction
Summary of the thread
A 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt is experiencing a boost pressure system malfunction, indicated by a check engine light, power loss, increased fuel consumption, and a whistling noise. Thanks for chiming in; misery loves company, I guess! Boost pressure readings... hmm, I haven't hooked up a gauge yet, but that's a great shout. Where exactly did you find the leak, if it was a leak, or was it indeed the wastegate? And were your symptoms constant, or did they come and go? Any other telltale signs I should be on the lookout for?

In my case, it turned out to be a faulty wastegate valve. The symptoms were pretty consistent; it felt like significant turbo lag at lower RPMs, and the whistling was always there under acceleration. Given your symptoms and my experience, I would strongly suggest taking your Cobalt to a reputable workshop. They will be able to perform a proper diagnostic test to pinpoint the problem. I hope, you can get it checked before it gets any worse.

Appreciate the insights; sounds like I'm on the right track at least. I dreaded the answer would be like that; I have taken it to my local mechanic, and he confirmed my fears, and it´s the wastegate valve needing replacing. The total cost is estimated to be around 860€, parts and labor included. Thanks again!

I know this headache all too well! I drive a Chevrolet Cobalt as well, and I had very similar symptoms last year. The whistling noise, the power loss, and especially the check engine light haunted me for weeks. Did you happen to check the boost pressure readings? In my case, they were consistently lower than expected. It could definitely point towards a wastegate issue or a leak in the system, just as you suspected. If the car loses boost, it will throw the light on.
