Given that the engine light is on and the symptoms align, it is highly probable that you're dealing with a defective diesel particulate filter. In my situation, the issue was indeed the DPF. I strongly advise against attempting any DIY solutions and recommend a visit to a reputable workshop for a thorough inspection and filter replacement. I ended up paying 1550€

Thanks for the info. I'll take it to a shop and get it checked out. Turns out it was the DPF as you suspected. Got it replaced.

I also own a Colorado with a diesel engine, and what you're describing sounds awfully familiar. I experienced similar symptoms – loss of power and excessive smoke. Have you noticed the engine light illuminated on the dashboard? It could indicate a problem with the exhaust system or the DPF itself. Have you considered a vehicle inspection?
