They are now in top shape again. However, fixing another problem - sporadic faulty communication between control units - was really expensive. That cost a hefty €955. But since then my Passat has been better again and I've had no further problems. So, after the workshop, everything went smoothly again. Of course, it's always a huge annoyance when things like this crop up, but at the end of the day, it's more important that you're safe on the road.
