Coolant Loss Mystery Sprinter Engine
Summary of the thread
A 2004 Mercedes Sprinter with a gasoline engine is experiencing coolant loss, with the check engine light indicating low coolant levels. Despite no visible leaks, potential causes include a faulty head gasket or cooling fan issues. A suggestion to check the coolant level sensor connection and radiator cap was made, as a defective sensor or cap could cause false low coolant warnings. Ultimately, a defective sensor connection was identified and repaired at a workshop, resolving the issue without major engine repairs.

Where exactly is that sensor located? Is it easy to get to? And how would I know if the radiator cap is bad?

The sensor is usually on the radiator or the coolant reservoir. It should be easy to spot, just follow the wires. As for the cap, if it's not sealing properly, you might see some coolant residue around it. Honestly, if the connection looks fine, I'd take it to a workshop. I ended up doing that, and the error stored in the memory pointed to a defective cable or plug connection.

Thanks for the info I checked the connection, and it looked okay. You were right; I took it to a shop, and they found a defective connection. Cost me 95€ to fix. Glad it wasn't the head gasket

I had a similar issue with my Sprinter. Check the cable and plug connection to the coolant level sensor. It's a common problem. If the sensor isn't working right, it'll throw an error even if your radiator fluid level is fine. Is your radiator cap sealing properly?
