Corolla EGR Valve Issue

My 2002 Toyota Corolla diesel is giving me trouble. It's got 115490 km and I'm experiencing reduced engine power, the check engine light is on, and there's smoke when I accelerate. The engine runs rough, especially at idle, and I'm burning fuel like crazy! Plus, there's jerking when accelerating, and a hissing sound. I suspect it's the EGR valve. Anyone else had similar experiences?

I also own a Corolla. Your symptoms sound very similar to what I experienced last year. Was there any specific circumstance when the symptoms started?

Thanks! It seemed to start gradually, but I really noticed it after a long drive on the motorway. The hissing seems to be coming from the engine bay, so I was thinking maybe a vacuum leak around the EGR valve?

The long drive might be the trigger. Based on your description, it does sound like a faulty EGR valve. The hissing could be related, especially with the other symptoms. I would recommend taking it to a trusted mechanic to get it checked and replaced.

Thanks! I took your advice and got it checked at the workshop. Turns out it was indeed the EGR valve, completely jammed with soot. They replaced it, and the total cost was 355€. Now my Corolla runs like a dream!
