Corolla Electronic Parking Brake Failure

Electronic parking brake on my 2021 Toyota Corolla hybrid with 84k kilometers is haywire. The handbrake refuses to engage, and a warning light is on. OBD scanner shows an error code related to the parking brake. Anyone else run into something like this? Trying to figure out if it's a simple fix before the repair shop robs me!

Summary of the thread

The electronic parking brake on a 2021 Toyota Corolla hybrid is malfunctioning, with the handbrake not engaging and a warning light illuminated. An error code from an OBD scanner suggests an issue with the parking brake. The likely cause is a defective electric motor within the brake caliper. Testing the motor requires technical skills and tools, so a professional diagnostic assessment is recommended.

Based on the symptoms – non-functional electronic parking brake, stored error code, and warning light – the electric motor within the brake calliper may be defective. Any unusual noises from the rear brake area when engaging the parking brake? Any recent maintenance or repairs involving the braking system?

No strange noises, and no recent work on the brakes. Could it really be the motor already? I thought maybe it was a sensor. Is there a way to test the motor before tearing things apart, or should I just take it to a professional?

Given the absence of auditory anomalies and recent brake work, the electric motor remains a likely culprit. Diagnostic procedures exist, involving multimeter testing of voltage and resistance at the motor connector, but that requires technical skill and tools. Considering the potential for complications, and the error code, I suggest professional diagnostic assessment. Repair cost is estimated at 505€.

I appreciate the advice! Sounds like this is beyond me. Took it to the shop today. You were spot on – defective motor in the brake calliper. Quoted me 505€, exactly as you said. Thanks for confirming my fears but also saving me from potentially making things worse!
