Corolla Lighting Fault

I've got a 2004 Toyota Corolla, gasoline engine, with a weird electrical problem. The lights are acting up – sometimes they just switch on by themselves. The dashboard lights flicker, and the tail lights are dim. I scanned it and there's an error stored related to the lighting circuit. I checked the fuses, they seem okay. Any ideas?

I had a similar issue with my Corolla, although I can't recall the year. Have you checked the headlight switch itself? Sometimes the contacts inside get corroded or damaged, causing intermittent faults. Does the error code specifically point to the headlight switch circuit?

Thanks for the quick reply! No, the error code is pretty generic, just says 'lighting fault'. How would I go about checking the switch itself? Is it something I can do myself, or does it require special tools? I am not the most experienced when it comes to electrical problems.

Given the generic error code and your lack of experience with electrics, I'd advise against dismantling the switch. In my case, it turned out to be a defective cable or plug connection to the switch itself. For peace of mind and to avoid further complications, it's probably best to have a workshop take a look at it. They'll have the proper diagnostic tools to pinpoint the exact problem.

Okay, thanks for the advice. Took it to a local shop, and you were spot on. It was a faulty connection at the switch. Cost me 95€ to get it sorted. Appreciate the help!
