CR Z Engine Power Loss
Summary of the thread
A 2014 Honda CR-Z hybrid experienced a significant reduction in engine power, with diagnostics indicating a potential engine control unit (ECU) failure. However, a suggestion was made to check the main relay, which supplies power to the ECU, as a faulty relay can mimic ECU failure symptoms. Upon inspection, the main relay was identified as the issue, and replacing it resolved the power loss problem, avoiding the need for a costly ECU replacement.

You mentioned the main relay. Could you elaborate on its location and how to test it effectively? I'm familiar with basic electrical testing, but any specific guidance for the CR-Z would be appreciated.

The main relay is typically located in the under-dash fuse box. Consult your CR-Z's wiring diagram for the exact location – you can find this information in the service manual. Testing involves checking for voltage at the relay's coil and output terminals when the ignition is on. A simple multimeter will do the trick. But honestly, given your symptoms and error codes, I'd recommend a workshop visit. Intermittent faults can be tricky to diagnose without specialized equipment.

Thanks for the suggestion regarding the main relay. It turned out to be the culprit, just as you suspected. Replacing it cost only 120€, a far cry from a new ECU! I appreciate you pointing me in the right direction.

Interesting. A completely dead ECU is rare unless there was a surge or water damage. Before condemning the ECU, have you checked the main relay that supplies power to it? A faulty relay can cause intermittent power loss, leading to those symptoms and stored error codes. It's a far cheaper fix than replacing the entire computer module.
