CR Z hybrid rough running EGR valve
Summary of the thread
A 2015 Honda CR Z hybrid is experiencing poor performance, with symptoms including a check engine light, engine struggles during acceleration, smoke, and increased fuel consumption. These issues suggest a potential problem with the emission control system, particularly the EGR valve. A defective or jammed EGR valve can cause such symptoms, and a diagnostic is recommended to confirm the issue. After a diagnostic, it was confirmed that the EGR valve was defective, and replacing it resolved the problem.

I don't have the tools for a diagnostic myself. Regarding idling noise, what should I listen for, and how would that confirm if it's the EGR valve? Is there something specific about the idling noise that would point to that?

An unusual hissing or whistling sound during idling could indicate a vacuum leak around the EGR valve or a blockage within the valve itself. Considering the range of issues and the car's mileage, it's advisable to visit a workshop. A defective EGR valve appears to be the most likely cause. They will be able to read the error codes and accurately diagnose the problem.

Thank you so much for your help! I took it to a local mechanic, and you were spot on. The diagnostic confirmed a defective EGR valve. The repair cost 355€, including parts and labor. It’s running smoothly again! I really appreciate your insight.

The symptoms suggest an emission control system problem. The check engine light, rough running, smoke, and hissing noise all point to a potential EGR valve issue. A defective or jammed EGR valve can cause these issues. However, without a proper diagnostic, it's hard to be sure. Have you noticed any changes in the noise levels when the engine is idling?
