Crankshaft Sensor Issue

My 2012 Peugeot 4008 diesel with 228952 km has the check engine light on. Engine power is reduced, response is sluggish, and fuel consumption is up. Diagnostics point to a 'crankshaft to camshaft reference value' issue, likely a defective crankshaft sensor. Has anyone encountered something similar? Could this also be related to the cam sensor or timing chain?

I have a 4008 and had similar symptoms last year, although my mileage was a bit lower. The engine felt like it was choking, and fuel consumption was definitely up. I recall the error code being something similar related to camshaft timing. Before you go ripping things apart, I suggest you check the wiring to the crankshaft sensor first. It is often exposed, and a loose connection or corroded wire can cause havoc.

Thanks! You mentioned checking the wiring to the crankshaft sensor. Can you recall if your issue was resolved by just cleaning the contacts, or did you have to replace the sensor itself? Also, did you experience any misfires?

I didn't have any misfires, but every car is different. Cleaning the contacts didn't solve the problem for me. It kept coming back after a short period. I ended up taking it to a workshop. They confirmed the sensor was faulty and replaced it. It's probably best if you take it to a reliable mechanic before you start throwing money and parts at it.

Following the advice, I took my Peugeot 4008 to a trusted mechanic. They confirmed that the crankshaft sensor was defective and replaced it. The 'crankshaft to camshaft reference value' error is now gone! The engine power is back, the response is crisp, and the fuel consumption has returned to normal. The repair cost me 340€, including the sensor and labor. Thanks a lot for the help! Your experience pointed me in the right direction and saved me from unnecessary tinkering.
