Croma exhaust temperature sensor issue
Summary of the thread
A 2006 Fiat Croma is experiencing issues with the check engine light, reduced power, and increased fuel consumption, suspected to be related to the exhaust temperature sensor. A possible cause could be a leak in the exhaust system, as even minor leaks can alter exhaust gas composition and trigger these symptoms. A professional diagnosis is recommended, including a smoke test to locate leaks and confirm sensor faults. The issue was resolved by replacing the faulty sensor and repairing the exhaust leak, improving the car's performance.

I haven't gotten around to checking the sensor readings yet, but I did visually inspect the exhaust and noticed some corrosion. Is it possible that a small leak could actually cause all these symptoms?

In my experience, even a minor exhaust leak can indeed trigger those symptoms. The sensor detects the altered exhaust gas composition and throws everything off. It's difficult to pinpoint the exact location and severity without a proper inspection, though. I would strongly recommend taking it to a workshop to have it properly diagnosed. They can perform a smoke test to locate the leak and confirm if the sensor is indeed faulty. Is there any chance that the corrosion has been affecting any other exhaust components?

Thanks for the insight. Based on what you've said, I'll take it to a trusted workshop for a professional diagnosis. It was a faulty exhaust temperature sensor, triggered by a small leak in the exhaust system. Sensor replacement and leak repair set me back 265€, but the car's running much better now.

Sounds familiar. I have a Croma as well. The symptoms you describe mirror a problem I encountered not too long ago. Have you inspected the exhaust system for any visible signs of damage or corrosion? What readings are you getting from the sensor, if you've had a chance to check?
