Crossfire's Failing Alternator Shows Classic Warning Signs

My alternator seems to be failing and I need advice. My 2007 Chrysler Crossfire (155k on the clock) has been acting up lately. The car won't start properly, headlights are dim, and engine power feels reduced. Check engine light is also on. Already had a bad experience with my local mechanic, so before going back I want to know what others think. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms and can recommend what to look for during the repair? Want to make sure I dont get overcharged for unnecessary work.

When my 2010 Chrysler 300 showed similar symptoms, it turned out to be a major alternator issue. The voltage drop was significant, causing electrical system problems across the board. The alternator replacement was unavoidable, but the serpentine belt also needed replacement due to wear. The symptoms match exactly what you describe, dim lights, reduced engine performance, and starting problems. A failing alternator doesn't properly charge the battery while driving, leading to a cascade of electrical issues. Before the full repair, the shop performed a charging system test which confirmed the alternator was only producing 11.2 volts instead of the required 13.8-14.2 volts. The diagnostic revealed worn brushes inside the alternator and a faulty voltage regulator. The repair involved: Complete alternator replacement, New serpentine belt installation, Battery load testing, Electrical system diagnostic This was a serious repair that couldn't be postponed, as continuing to drive with a failing alternator risks complete electrical system failure and getting stranded. When the car won't start, it's often because the battery has been drained due to the alternator not charging it properly during operation. Request a complete charging system diagnostic before authorizing repairs. This will document the actual voltage output and confirm the alternator is truly the problem.

Thanks for sharing your experience with the alternator issue on your Chrysler 300. I had nearly identical problems with my Crossfire last year, same symptoms with dim lights and the car not starting properly. Really helpful to know about the serpentine belt needing replacement too. Can you remember roughly how much you paid for the full repair? Also wondering if you had any other electrical problems pop up since getting it fixed? My car electronics have been acting strange lately so trying to figure out if I should expect more issues even after replacing the alternator.

Glad I could help with the alternator issue details. Got my Chrysler 300 back from the shop last week after the complete charging system repair, total cost was 960€ including parts and labor. The generator faulty condition was fixed completely and the car runs perfectly now. Since the alternator replacement, all electrical systems are working normally again. No more dim headlights, starting problems, or strange electronic behavior. The charging system test shows proper voltage output now, and the battery maintains full charge during operation. If your car electronics are still acting strange, I recommend getting a full diagnostic on the electrical system. Sometimes when an alternator fails, it can cause voltage spikes that affect other components. But in my case, fixing the defective generator resolved all the electrical quirks without any additional issues popping up afterward. The investment was worth it to avoid getting stranded with a car that won't start. Plus, having a properly functioning charging system protects all the other electrical components from damage due to voltage fluctuations.

Thanks for the advice. Just got back from the repair shop and wanted to share how it went. The charging system diagnostic confirmed what we suspected, a failing alternator causing voltage drop issues. Final repair bill came to 890€, which included: New alternator, Fresh serpentine belt, System diagnostic, Labor costs The mechanic showed me the worn-out brushes in the old alternator and explained how it was causing the engine misfire and electrical problems. They did a thorough job testing all car electronics after the replacement. Been driving for a few days now and what a difference, strong starts, bright headlights, and no more check engine light. The engine runs smoother too. Glad I got it fixed before getting stranded somewhere. Thanks again for helping me understand what to expect. Made me feel more confident dealing with the repair shop this time around.
