Crossland Transmission Woes: Slipping Gears & Warning Light

Hey everyone, my 2021 Vauxhall CrosslandX (petrol) is giving me transmission troubles. When driving, I notice the transmission slipping and shifting irregularly, along with grinding sounds during gear changes. The speedometer warning light is also on. I suspect it might be the transmission oil temperature sensor, but I'm not entirely sure. Has anyone dealt with similar symptoms? Really interested to know what the actual problem was and how your mechanic fixed it. Any repair costs and timeframes would be helpful too. Thanks in advance!

Hey there! I had a very similar issue with my 2019 Vauxhall Grandland X (petrol). The symptoms you're describing sound exactly like what I experienced, that awful grinding during shifts and erratic transmission behavior really had me worried! Turned out my transmission oil level was too low, which was causing all these problems. Took it to my trusted workshop, and they did a thorough check, topped up the transmission fluid, and checked for any leaks. The whole thing cost me about 365€ and took about half a day to fix. Before I can share more specific advice, how many miles/kilometers on your car? When was the last transmission service? Did the issue start suddenly or gradually? This info would help me understand if you're dealing with exactly what I faced. Hope this helps! Let me know those details when you can.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! My car has 143435 KM on the clock, and I just had my regular service done last month. To answer your question, the issue started gradually over the past few weeks. It was barely noticeable at first, but now it's getting more obvious, especially during cold starts. Your situation does sound pretty similar to what I'm experiencing. Good to know it might just be a fluid issue, that would be a relief compared to a full transmission problem! Did you notice any other warning signs before you got it fixed?

Hey again! Thanks for those details. Yeah, looking at those numbers and symptoms, this really does sound similar to what I experienced with my Grandland X. Now that you mention cold starts, yes! That was actually one of the first signs I noticed too. My transmission would act up more in the mornings, and then it would somewhat "settle" after warming up. But I ignored it initially (big mistake, I know). Before I got it fixed, I also noticed that the shifts became increasingly unpredictable, especially between 2nd and 3rd gear. There was this annoying lag before engaging the gear, and sometimes it felt like the car was "hunting" between gears. The grinding noise got worse over time, particularly when accelerating from a stop. One thing I didn't mention in my first reply, I also noticed slightly higher fuel consumption before getting it fixed. Not sure if you've experienced that too? Given that you've just had your regular service done, it's a bit concerning that they didn't catch this. Did they specifically check the transmission fluid level and condition during the service? Because in my case, it turned out there was a small leak that was causing the fluid to gradually decrease. I'd definitely get it checked soon, these symptoms tend to get worse pretty quickly if left unchecked. Better to spend a few hundred Euro now than face a major transmission repair later!

Thanks so much for all this detailed info! Actually, now that you mention it, I have noticed my fuel consumption going up recently, I just didn't connect the dots until you brought it up! Looking back at my service paperwork, they didn't specifically mention checking the transmission fluid, which is pretty frustrating considering all these symptoms. I'm going to call my garage first thing tomorrow and get it booked in for a transmission fluid check. Really hoping it's just a simple fluid issue like yours was! You've definitely saved me from potentially making the same mistake of waiting too long. Better to get it sorted now before it turns into something more serious (and expensive!). Thanks again for sharing your experience, it's been super helpful!
