CrosslandX Overheating Issue
Summary of the thread
A 2023 Vauxhall CrosslandX with a gasoline engine and high mileage is experiencing overheating and a persistent check engine light. The initial suspicion was a defective radiator fan or broken fan blade, but the coolant level was fine. A faulty speed sensor was considered a potential cause, affecting the cooling system's functionality. After consulting a mechanic, it was confirmed that the speed sensor was indeed defective, and replacing it resolved the issue, restoring the radiator fan's operation.

Thanks for the tip! I'll definitely check if the fan spins freely. When you say 'relay,' what exactly does that do, and where would I find it? Also, how hot should the engine get before the fan is supposed to kick in? I don’t want to let it get dangerously hot just to test it!

No problem. A relay is basically an electrical switch. It gets a signal from the temperature sensor to turn the fan on or off. It's usually located in the fuse box under the hood; the car's manual should show you exactly where it is. As for the temperature, I wouldn't let it go past the normal operating range on the gauge. If it starts creeping towards the red zone, shut it down. Honestly, if you're not comfortable with electrical stuff, it might be best to take it to a workshop. Overheating can cause serious engine damage if you're not careful.

Thanks again for the advice. I took your suggestion and brought it to a local mechanic. Turns out you were right about the speed sensor, it was defective. They replaced it, and the radiator fan is now working perfectly. The total repair cost was around 250€. Really appreciate your help in pointing me in the right direction!

Hey there, overheating and a check engine light are never fun! I had a similar issue with my old Peugeot a while back. Turned out the fan motor was on its way out. Have you checked if the fan even kicks in when the engine gets hot? A simple way to test is to let the car idle until the temperature gauge starts to climb. The fan should switch on automatically to cool things down. If it doesn't, it could be the fan itself, a relay, or even a temperature sensor. Does the fan spin freely if you try to turn it by hand (when the engine is off, of course!)?
