CrosslandX Overvoltage Electrical Faults

My 2021 Vauxhall CrosslandX, gasoline engine, is having electrical issues. 122334 km on the clock. The error code points to overvoltage, causing fault memory entries and system failures. The battery seems weak when starting, and there's a general electrical malfunction. Could a heavily discharged or defective battery cause this?

Summary of the thread

A 2021 Vauxhall CrosslandX experienced electrical issues, with error codes indicating overvoltage, leading to system failures. The problem was suspected to be linked to a weak battery, but it was suggested that a faulty voltage regulator in the alternator could be the cause, as it might force too much charge into the battery. The solution involved replacing the faulty voltage regulator and the damaged battery, resolving the overvoltage issue.

Interesting issue. I've got a CrosslandX and had some similar symptoms a while back, though not all at once. Many fault codes and random system failures sound familiar. Did you check your alternator output? A failing voltage regulator could cause an overvoltage situation, frying your electronics. Or perhaps you recently jump started the car? What voltages are you seeing across the battery terminals when the car is running?

Thanks for the reply! I haven't checked the alternator output myself – not really sure how to do that safely. And no, I haven't jump-started it recently. I don't have a multimeter to check the voltage either. Is it possible the battery itself is causing the overvoltage, or is it more likely to be something else like the alternator?

While a completely dead battery could cause some weird readings as the system tries to compensate, it's far less likely to cause overvoltage. It is much more probable that the battery issues are a symptom of something else forcing too much charge into it. Given the number of electrical faults, I'd advise against further self-diagnosis without proper equipment. Best take it to a workshop with the proper diagnostic tools. Continuing to drive it may damage components beyond repair!

Thanks so much for the advice! You were spot on. Took it to a garage, and it turned out to be a faulty voltage regulator in the alternator. It was causing the overvoltage, which damaged the battery. New alternator and battery later, and it's all fixed. Cost me 290€ in the end. Appreciate the help!
