Crown Victoria MAF Sensor Issues

I'm at my wit's end with my 2010 Ford Crown Victoria, gasoline engine. Lately, she's been acting up. I've noticed a significant drop in fuel economy, and she stalls out at idle sometimes. The check engine light is now illuminated, and I even saw some smoke puff out when I accelerated hard the other day. I'm thinking it might be related to the mass air flow meter (MAF). Does anyone have any experience with similar issues? Could a faulty MAF sensor really be the culprit behind all these problems?

Summary of the thread

A 2010 Ford Crown Victoria experienced issues such as reduced fuel economy, stalling at idle, and the check engine light being illuminated, with smoke observed during hard acceleration. These symptoms suggested a potential problem with the mass air flow (MAF) sensor. A faulty MAF sensor can disrupt the air-fuel ratio, causing such issues. After confirming the sensor's erratic readings with a scan tool, replacing the defective MAF sensor resolved the problems.

Sounds familiar. I had similar issues with my Crown Vic a while back. The check engine light, stalling, and rough running were driving me crazy. Have you tried checking the air-fuel ratio? A faulty MAF sensor can definitely throw that off, leading to all sorts of problems. It definitely sounds like a sensor failure to me.

Thanks for the quick reply! You mentioned checking the air-fuel ratio. How exactly did you go about doing that? Did you use a scan tool or rely on live data readings? Also, were your symptoms constant, or did they come and go?

I used a scan tool to monitor the live data coming from the MAF sensor and the oxygen sensors. The readings were erratic, confirming my suspicion. My symptoms were intermittent at first, but they gradually became more frequent and severe. If you're seeing smoke, I'd advise getting it checked at a trusted workshop sooner rather than later. Might be best to replace the sensor if the scan confirms it's faulty.

Thanks again for the advice! I took it to my mechanic and, you were right, it was a defective MAF sensor. After replacing it with a new one for 365€ all symptoms are gone. Appreciate the help!
