Crown Victoria rough running exhaust leak

Hi, I have a 2009 Ford Crown Victoria with a gasoline engine. The check engine light is on, and it's running rough. There's also a strong exhaust smell and I think it's leaking. Mileage is at 177018 km. Any ideas?

Hey, I had a similar problem with my Crown Vic. Check your oxygen sensors – specifically the lambda sensor. When mine went bad, the engine light came on, and it ran like a tractor. Think of it like your car's nose; if it can't smell properly, it messes everything up!

Thanks! Where exactly is the lambda sensor located? Is it something I can check myself, or should I just take it to a shop?

It's usually on the exhaust pipe, before or after the catalytic converter. You could check the wiring, but honestly, with the exhaust leak and rough running, and if you are not familiar with that kind of repair, I'd recommend taking it to a workshop. Could be the sensor, but there may be more damage. Better safe than sorry!

Thanks a lot for the advice! I took it to a shop, and you were right – it was a defective lambda sensor. The exhaust was leaking a bit too, and it cost 375€ to get it all fixed. Runs like new now!
