CRV Crankshaft to Camshaft Reference Value Issue

Hey, I've got a 2017 Honda CR-V with a gasoline engine giving me grief. It's got 223790 km on the clock. The check engine light popped on, and I'm experiencing seriously reduced engine power, almost like it's in limp mode. Throttle response is terrible, and I'm burning way more fuel than usual. I pulled the codes and it's pointing to a crankshaft to camshaft reference value issue. I'm suspecting a dodgy crank sensor. Anyone else seen this before?

Summary of the thread

A 2017 Honda CR-V with high mileage is experiencing reduced engine power and poor throttle response, with a check engine light indicating a crankshaft to camshaft reference value issue. The problem is suspected to be a faulty crankshaft sensor. A suggestion is made to inspect the timing belt or chain for wear or slippage, as timing misalignment could also cause similar symptoms. After consulting a mechanic, the crankshaft sensor is replaced, resolving the issue.

Greetings. I encountered a comparable issue with my 2014 Opel Insignia, albeit with a diesel engine. The symptoms you describe align with my experience. The error code also indicated a crankshaft position sensor problem. Have you inspected the timing belt or chain for any signs of wear or slippage?

Thanks for the quick reply! That's useful. Regarding the timing, is there an easy way to check the belt without tearing everything apart? I'm wondering if the reference value issue could be caused by the timing being off a tooth or two, even if the sensor itself is okay.

While a visual inspection might reveal obvious damage, a precise assessment of timing belt alignment necessitates specialized tools. Given the error code and your symptoms, I would suggest consulting a qualified mechanic for a comprehensive diagnosis. A faulty crankshaft sensor is a probable cause, but a timing issue should not be ruled out without proper investigation.

Appreciate the advice! I took it to my local shop, and it turned out you were spot on with the crank sensor. After replacement, the engine runs fine again, the final repair cost was 340€ Thanks!
