CRV Gear Shift Issues

Alright, I'm having an odd issue with my 2020 Honda CR-V, gasoline engine. Mileage is sitting at 170031 km. The gear shift indicator is acting up. Essentially, it is not possible to engage the gears. I'm also seeing implausible shifting behavior. The gearbox slips and shifts uncleanly, and I hear grinding noises when shifting gears. I pulled the codes and, yep, error stored in the error memory. And get this – the gear selection display in the speedometer is completely dead. Suspect the control unit is defective. Anyone else run into this? Getting quotes around 1000€ which seems steep.

Summary of the thread

A 2020 Honda CR-V is experiencing gear shift issues, including inability to engage gears, implausible shifting behavior, and grinding noises. The gear selection display is non-functional, and error codes suggest a problem with the Transmission Control Module (TCM). The suspected cause is a defective control unit, and a workshop confirmed this diagnosis, quoting a repair cost of around 1000€. The recommended solution is to replace the faulty control unit to resolve the issue.

Sounds familiar. I have a CR-V as well. I was experiencing something similar with mine a while back. Gear shifts were all over the place and the display was useless. It was like the car couldn't figure out what gear it was in. What codes are you pulling?

The codes are pointing towards the TCM throwing a fit. Did you experience complete failure to engage gears, or was it more intermittent? And did your gear selection display die completely?

Yeah, mine would occasionally refuse to go into gear. It was intermittent at first, but got progressively worse. And the display was totally dead, just a blank screen. Honestly, I'd bite the bullet and take it to a reputable workshop. Sounds like it's beyond basic troubleshooting.

Roger that. Thanks for the info. Looks like a trip to the shop is in order. Confirmed with the workshop that the control unit is indeed faulty. Quoted price is spot on. Hopefully, this fixes the issue once and for all.
