Dead Audi A3: Zero Response Points to ECU Failure

My 2019 Audi A3 wont start, possible ECU failure? Car has been properly maintained at 58801 km. When I turn the key, absolutely nothing happens. Had a recent bad experience at a mechanic and want to make sure I get it right this time. Has anyone experienced similar engine software issues with their A3? Looking for recommendations on how to properly diagnose this and what repairs typically cost for engine control problems on these models.

Had a similar situation with my 2016 Audi A4 2.0 TFSI. The no-start condition often points to battery connection issues before jumping to ECU conclusions. When performing engine diagnostics on these models, loose or corroded battery terminals frequently trigger these symptoms. The main signs were identical, zero response when turning the key, no dash lights, no starter motor sound. Initially suspected engine software problems, but proper testing revealed heavily corroded battery terminals affecting the entire electrical system. The fix required: Complete terminal cleaning, Cable replacement due to corrosion migration, New battery clamps, Testing all ground connections, Running a full system diagnostic scan This is generally a moderate repair job, not typically indicating serious engine stalling or fuel injection problems. The key is having proper diagnostics done first, the ECU rarely fails completely without warning signs. These Audi models have robust engine control systems that usually show progressive issues before total failure. Worth checking the simple electrical connections before exploring more complex engine software solutions. A qualified technician with proper diagnostic tools can quickly determine if its truly an ECU issue.

Thanks for sharing that experience. I recently had an ECU failure warning on my A3 that also caused starting problems. The check engine light was flashing before the car completely died. My mechanic first suspected engine surge issues but after running diagnostics, found the ECU needed reprogramming. Can you recall approximately how much you paid for your repair? Did you have any recurring electrical problems after getting it fixed? Wondering if I should expect any similar issues down the line with mine.

Thanks for asking about the repair costs. Since seeing the mechanic, the engine control malfunction was completely resolved. The issue turned out to be much simpler than suspected, just poorly connected battery cables that needed proper securing and cleaning. Total cost was 155 Euro for fixing all cable connections and running a complete system diagnostic check. After the repair, all electrical systems have been working flawlessly. No check engine lights, no starting problems, and no engine stalling incidents. Unlike your situation where the ECU needed reprogramming, my simpler electrical fix has proven to be a permanent solution. Regular engine diagnostics since then have shown no abnormalities. This highlights why proper diagnosis is crucial, what appears as complex engine software issues can sometimes be resolved through basic electrical maintenance. If your ECU was reprogrammed, you should not experience similar connection-related problems, as that addresses a different type of engine control issue altogether. Worth noting that proper battery maintenance can prevent many electrical gremlins in these models.

I took my A3 to a certified Audi shop last week. The service tech ran a complete engine diagnostic scan which confirmed the ECU needed reprogramming. Total repair cost was 480 Euro including labor. They also found and fixed some loose wiring connections near the battery. Relief to have it properly diagnosed this time. The engine light is now off and the car starts perfectly. Previous shop had misdiagnosed it as an engine surge problem and wanted to replace several expensive components unnecessarily. Feeling much better about this repair since all systems are functioning normally again. No electrical issues or engine stalling since the fix. Planning to stick with this shop for future maintenance given how thoroughly they handled the diagnostics and repair. Good lesson learned about getting proper engine diagnostics done first rather than jumping to worst-case scenarios. The ECU issue ended up being fixable through reprogramming rather than full replacement.
