Dead Mitsubishi Challenger: Ignition Switch Mystery
Summary of the thread
The 2011 Mitsubishi Challenger faced a starting issue where the ignition wouldn't turn on, suspected to be due to the ignition starter switch. A similar case with a 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander revealed that such symptoms could also stem from a defective main wiring harness, causing electrical failures. The solution involved a thorough electrical system check and repair of worn-out wiring and a faulty ignition switch. The repair cost was reasonable, and the vehicle's performance improved significantly post-repair. Seeking a mechanic specializing in Mitsubishi electrical systems was crucial for accurate diagnosis and effective resolution.

Hey, thanks for sharing your experience! That wiring harness issue sounds pretty familiar to what I'm dealing with now. Really helpful to know it might not just be the ignition switch. BTW, do you remember roughly how much you ended up paying for the whole repair? Also, has everything been running smoothly since then, or have you noticed any other electrical quirks?

Hey there! Glad I could help with my experience. Yes, after getting my 2014 Outlander fixed, everything has been running perfectly, no more electrical gremlins at all! I actually just had this fixed about 8 months ago, and I'm happy to report that the ignition starter switch issue hasn't come back at all. The total bill came to 95€ for the wiring harness repair, which was honestly a relief because I was worried it might be much more expensive. The mechanic found that some connections had worn out over time, but once they fixed that, all the electrical problems disappeared. The power windows work flawlessly now, no more flickering dashboard lights, and the car starts up perfectly every time. It's like having a new car! If you're experiencing similar symptoms, I'd definitely recommend getting it checked out sooner rather than later. Small electrical issues can sometimes lead to bigger problems if left unchecked. Just make sure you find a mechanic who really knows their way around Mitsubishi electrical systems, it makes a huge difference in getting the diagnosis right the first time. Let me know how it goes with your Challenger!

Thanks for all that info! Just got back from the mechanic actually. You were spot on about finding someone who knows Mitsubishis, took it to a specialist and they sorted it out pretty quick. Turns out it was a combination of issues, worn-out wiring and a faulty ignition switch. Cost me about 120€ in total, which wasn't as bad as I was expecting. The funny part was when they showed me the old wiring, it looked like it had been through a war! The mechanic was great though, explained everything clearly and even showed me what to look out for in the future. Car's running like a dream now, starts first time, every time. Really appreciate everyone's help on this. Sometimes it's just good to hear from others who've been through similar stuff before throwing money at repairs. Guess I'll be keeping this mechanic's number handy for future reference! Thanks again! Case closed on this one.

I had a similar issue with my 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander last year. Initially thought it was just the ignition switch, but turned out the main wiring harness was defective. The connections had deteriorated over time, causing intermittent electrical failures. Didn't notice it at first, but there were warning signs like occasional flickering dashboard lights and the power windows acting up. Took it to the dealership service center, and they diagnosed it through a complete electrical system check. The wiring harness replacement was a major job, took them two full days to complete. This was definitely a serious issue since it affected the entire electrical system of the car. My suggestion would be to get it properly diagnosed first. Sometimes what seems like a simple ignition switch problem could be part of a bigger electrical issue. I'd recommend going to either the dealer or a shop that specializes in Mitsubishi electrical systems. Hope this helps with your decision.
